• 2016 Rules

    Annual membership dues for the Texas Automatic Outlaws is $200. With that you will receive an official membership card which will get your car, driver and two additional crew members in for free.  All rules subject to change at the sole discretion of the Rules Committee .

    2016 General Rules:

    1. All rules subject to change at the sole discretion of the Rules Committee if needed to keep the class field as even as possible or for safety. (it would have to be a drastic difference in a certain combination)

    2. Required to be able to run at least a 4.80 in the 1/8th to be a member of TAO .

    3. Engine diaper or belly pan required.

    4. Double bead lock wheels or liners required 4.50 or faster.

    5. On board fire system required.

    6. Only one type power added allowed. (No blowers with nitrous etc).

    7. Dual chutes required for 4.50 or Faster.

    8. Chassis must meet requirement for E.T. achieved.

    9. NHRA/IHRA TOP SPORTSMAN SAFETY RULES will be enforced..

    10. Only full body cars or trucks with working doors are allowed and must be drive from the left hand side.

    11. Nitromethane is prohibited

    12. Weight rules are as follows: 

        (Nitrous combos with bore spacing GREATER than 5.0″ weigh 2550 MIN.limited to one bottle with a single #6 line no less than 3′ long! 15 pound bottle ok. No weight breaks)

        (Nitrous combos with 5.0′ bore space weigh 2450 min. No weight breaks..)

        (Nitrous combos with 4.84 weigh 2350 min. No weight breaks..)

    13. Big Block Chevy combos w/conventional heads (23deg. weigh 2450) (less than 23deg. weigh 2550) (excludes 481x and Hemi combos)

    14. Maximum cylinder bore spacing is 5.300”

    15. PSI Screw Superchargers are permitted at maximum overdrive ( D rotor= 1.85, C rotor= 1.715 )

    16. 18/71 Roots Superchargers are permitted at maximum overdrive (15 percent over)

    17. 14/71 or 16/71 Billet Case Roots Superchargers permitted at maximum overdrive 1.18 (18 percent over) Billet BDS 14/71 16/71 excluded

    18. Whipple Screw Superchargers are permitted at maximum overdrive 1.36 (36 percent over)

    19. Twin Turbo are limited to 88mm maximum. NO INSERTS.

    20. No size limitation on Single Turbo

    21. Any converter driven transmission allowed. No Clutches

    22. If a qualified car breaks before the first round of eliminations an alternate will be placed in the broken car’s slot. (Note: Once notification is given to any committee member that a qualified car is broken, that car is disqualified from eliminations. This notification cannot be retracted or reversed.)

    23. Alternates inserted into the field after a qualified member is disqualified will receive round money only. Qualifying money will stay with the car that qualified.

    24. The 2016 TAO decal must be displayed on the rear window of each participating entry. Decals are supplied with membership. If you do not have one, contact a committee member upon arrival at the event. Must be a paid member to compete.

    25. Shakedown runs are allowed before qualifying begins. Once qualifying starts, no further shakedown passes are allowed. Test passes are allowed after you have been eliminated.

    26. Qualifying runs will be made side-by-side alternating lanes for each subsequent run. Lanes will be assigned by race director. You will be paired as you come to staging. You will have 3 calls for staging. First call 15 min, Second call 10 min, Third and final call 5 min. Race will proceed 5 minutes after third call, if you’re having a problem please contact an official and let them know ASAP. If you make both qualifying attempts in the same lane the latter will be void.

    27. Eliminations will be run on a Sportsman ladder.

    28. Low qualifier of each pairing gets lane choice. If you have lane choice, you can change that choice only before burning out. Once you burn out, you are obligated to the lane in which your burnout took place.

    29. Points follow the driver. Memberships follow the car.

    30. An event is considered “in the books” once the first round of eliminations is complete. If the race ends for any reason after the first round is finished, the race is considered complete and all positions will be paid evenly for the round if the race is called.

    31. If a race is rained out before the completion of the first round, it is considered a “Rain-out” and qualifying starts over on the reschedule date.

    32. Once you or the other car take the first “Pre-Stage” amber your run is considered complete.You will not be allowed to refire and make a qualifying pass.

    33. If you are unable to start in the staging lanes during eliminations, you will have 1 minute to get the car started and come to the line after your opponent has started.

    34. Drivers are permitted to drive only one entry per event.

    35. Once the track official has pulled you through the staging lanes, any decision made pertaining to the run governed by the starter (track official). TAO responsibility is to direct you to the staging lanes and make sure you are paired and ready to race.

    36. Hans or Hybrid head restraint required.

    37. If a record is set MPH or E.T. and it stands for the entire season a 20 point bonus will be awarded.

    38. All safety must meet NHRA/IHRA TOP SPORTSMAN SAFETY RULES

    39. Must have NHRA/IHRA Top Sportsman Licenses by May 2016

    40. PROTEST RULE- If a team is protested the protester will be charged $500.00 if the team is leagal $250.00 goes to the team protested and $250.00 goes to the points fund. If the team is not legal the protesters funds will be returned..

    41. NO ALL RUN FIELDS…. 8 car field unless there is 15 cars or more it will be a 16 car field…

    Top Dragster Rules 2016!!!!

    TD HELMET Full-face helmet meeting Snell M2000, M2005, M2010, SA2000, SA2005, SA2010, SFI 31.2A, or 41.2A mandatory; shield mandatory (goggles prohibited).

    NECK COLLAR/HEAD AND NECK RESTRAINT DEVICE/SYSTEM A head and neck restraint device/system is mandatory for all drivers. At all times that the driver is in the race vehicle, from the ready line until the vehicle is on the return road, driver must properly utilize an SFI-approved head and neck restraint device/system, including connecting the helmet as required for full functionality of the device. The device/system must meet SFI Spec 38.1 and must display a valid SFI label. The head and neck restraint device/system, when connected, must conform to the manufacturer’s mounting instructions, and it must be configured, maintained, and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Modification of the device is prohibited. Neck collar meeting SFI Spec 3.3 mandatory for all other cars. A head and neck restraint device can be used with, or without, a neck collar; when a neck collar is not used, an SFI 3.3 head sock or SFI Spec 3.3 skirted helmet is required.

    PROTECTIVE CLOTHING Jacket and pants or suit meeting SFI Spec 3.2A/15, gloves meeting SFI Spec 3.3/5, and boots or shoes meeting SFI Spec 3.3/5 mandatory. TOP DRAGSTER Requirements and specifications for Top Dragster are the same as those for ProMod.

    Class is for dragster and open-bodied altered-type vehicles only. Altereds must have open front wheels. Full-fender and/or runningboard-equipped street roadsters or Funny Car bodies prohibited. Qualified fields with competition conducted in a dial-in E.T. format. Minimum eighth-mile dial 3.66 to 4.60 maximum.

    DESIGNATION TD followed by car number. Numbers must be at least 4 inches high.

    Minimum weight at the conclusion of run, including driver: Small-block dragster or altereds Naturally aspirated: 1,450 pounds Nitrous assisted: 1,550 pounds Supercharged or turbocharged: 1,650 pounds Big-block dragster or altereds Naturally aspirated: 1,500 pounds Nitrous assisted: 1,700 pounds Supercharged or turbocharged: 1,800 pounds

    OUTLAW 632 RULES

    Stock style and general shape car / truck bodies.

    2. Must have working taillights.

    3. Must have engine diaper.

    4. Minimum ground clearance 3”

    5. Front extension not to exceed 6 inches from factory bumper. Max front end overhang with splitter is 45” from center of

    front spindle.

    6. Courtesy staging and Auto Start will be in effect.

    7. Bye runs- Must take tree under vehicle’s power.

    8. Tech officials have final discretion on all rules on race day.

    9. No split dominator/ carbs.

    10. EFI ok. + 50 lbs. for EFI combos.

    11. No blowers.

    12. No turbos.

    13. Standard factory bore spacing only.

    14. No Billet heads permitted.

    15. Minimum clutch diameter 10”. Max 2 disks.

    16. Progressives allowed 

    17. Ladder – Outlaw ladder will be run. 16-1, 15-2, etc. If not full field, blanks will be loaded for unfilled spots.

    18. All engines are subject to P & G at any time. Only a driver or car owner can protest another participant. It will be up to TAO officials as to if such a protest is warranted.

    Car & Driver Base Weights

    1. 632 cubic inch limit (up to 640 ok) – 3000 lbs.

    2. Small block – 2550 lbs.

    3. Natural Aspirated – BB 2600 lbs., SB (max 485 cu in)- no minimum weight

    Weight Deductions/ Additions- All Cars

    1. 28 x 10.5/275 OR smaller- 50 lbs.

    2. Big block conventional heads – 100 lbs. Conventional head defined as maintaining valve angle +/-2 degrees of stock valve

    angle. No raised runners.

    3. Single carb – 50 lbs.

    4. EFI +50 lbs

    5. No wheelie bars -25 lbs

    6. Despite combination of weight deductions minimum big block weight is 2750 lbs.

    7. Despite combination of weight deductions minimum small block weights is 2350 lb

    Top Dragster Rules 2016!!!!
